Pantai Jerudong Specialist Centre (PJSC) hosted a one-day open event dubbed ‘Movember’ yesterday to mark the Men’s Health Month of November.
Over 100 participants from corporate organisations and the public attended the event, which aimed at promoting awareness on early cancer detection and diagnosis of prostate cancer, testicular cancer and colorectal cancer – the most common cancers among men in
Brunei Darussalam.
Head of Early Detection and Cancer Prevention Services Datin Dr Hajah Noraslinah binti Haji Ramlee and Head of Medical Oncology Dr Lu Shir Kiong, the co-organisers; The Brunei Cancer Centre Director Dato Seri Laila Jasa Dr Babu Sukumaran, in his capacity as Medical Oncology Specialist, and Radiation Oncology Specialist Dr Haji Jamsari Khalid also attended.
Goodwill Ambassador and Messenger of Cancer Awareness for PJSC Wu Chun was present as the special guest.
PJSC Executive Director Dr Haji Mazrul Adimin bin Haji Awang Besar said the goal of Movember is to revamp the face of men’s health by enhancing awareness, which could lead to early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment plans which could ultimately reduce the number of preventable deaths.
“Other than regular check-ups, Movember encourages men to be aware of their family histories and to adopt a healthier lifestyle,” he said.
An interactive session titled ‘More than just a Moustache…Let’s Share’ was held in the morning, with panellists made up of Wu Chun, Dr Haji Jamsari Khalid, Dato Seri Laila Jasa Dr Babu Sukumaran and prostate cancer survivor Lim Siew Yong.
In the afternoon, a session titled ‘Cakap-Cakap: Let’s talk about men’s health’ was delivered in a specialist-patient role-playing activity to mimic a real medical consultation, with the purpose of highlighting key messages including signs and symptoms, red flags, general men’s health and concerns.
Physiotherapist at the Rehabilitation Department of PJSC Muhammad Faez Tajuddin introduced the attendees to physical activities, or exercise life hacks, which are designed to fit into busy lifestyles.
Fitness Zone also showed support by offering participants a three-day wellness pass for two, to encourage an active and healthy lifestyle.
The PJSC team will also be holding workshops and awareness activities in collaboration with various corporate organisations, to further promote Movember and Men’s Health Month of November.
