Two young coders representing Brunei Darussalam won the Bronze Award in the ASEAN Cyberkids Camp 2020 organised by the Ministry of Communications and Informatics (MCI) of the Republic of Indonesia, held online on Saturday.

Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College Year 7 student Muhammad Musa Saifullah bin Mohammad Satria Alam Shah and DES School Year 6 student Redzuan bin Shahrinan were supervised by Curriculum Development Department’s (CDD) ICT Unit at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Mohamad Zuno Kartono bin Haji Ali.

The students interacted with participants from other ASEAN member states (AMS) and used Scratch programming to create a multimedia computer project based on the title, ‘Artificial Intelligence’ (AI).

ASEAN CyberKids Camp is one of the initiatives under the ASEAN Digital Ministers Meeting (ADGMIN) and supported by the ASEAN Digital Senior Officials Meeting (ADGSOM).

The annual event is hosted by an AMS rotationally and participated by AMS primary students.

Eight AMS participated this year and each was represented by a team of two students aged between seven and 12, as well as one supervising tutor.

The event is aimed at increasing the AMS students’ awareness of cross-cultural issues, enhancing their skills in critical thinking, problem-solving and teamwork, and improving their ability to use ICT creatively through content contributions and applications creation.

To realise Brunei as a Smart Nation, youth need to be equipped with new skill sets to adapt to technologies such as AI, Internet of things (IoT) and big data with the emerging technologies in the Fourth Industrial Revolution (IR4.0).

Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) has been proactively promoting the development of ICT knowledge and skills, particularly among local students, with various programmes including the annual TechKids Camp and Hackathon for Teens.
