CHUNG Hwa Middle School (CHMS) students have done their school proud after bagging the Brunei Info-Communication Technology Awards (BICTA) 2016 Royal Patron Award.
Speaking to the Bulletin at the award ceremony yesterday, team member Tan Kia Kong noted that the winning app ‘BHealth’ was created to assist people in need of medical attention. The app contains numerous features, including ‘Doctors Nearby.’
“We want to emphasise Doctors Nearby as our main feature because it provides nearby location of clinics by making use of the phone’s GPS and Internet service provider.”
He said, the idea was inspired after a friend had gotten into a motorbike accident in Thailand, during which he sustained serious injuries and was faced with great difficulty in contacting people, on top of having to deal with language being a problem. This prompted the team to invent the online-translator and offline-languages to help iron out communication issues.
Bagging the Royal Patron Award came as a surprise to the team, who intends to include the locations of more hospital and clinics across the Asia-Pacific region and to add more features to the app.
Also planned is the creation of a small widget button in the home screen that, when clicked, will alert family members in the event of an emergency.
“We have also opened a feedback survey in our app allowing users to add their input so that we can make this even more successful,” Tan added.
The team promises to invest more effort into their app in preparation for the APICTA.
Meanwhile, ICT Industry Category winner Nagender Aneja and his spouse, Dr Sandhya, hopes to further improve the OffAT-Chat in airplane mode. This winning app allows users to chat and exchange messages/handwritten messages while in airplane mode.
With regards to how he came up with the idea, Nagender Aneja, a Research Officer at Universiti Brunei Darussalam’s Innovation and Enterprise Office, explained that it was actually part of his PhD work.
“I am doing PhD Adhoc on Social Network… This network says that you can connect two devices without using any central infrastructure, so we are using the social applications in Adhoc enabling two users to socially connect with each other without using any infrastructure.”
Meanwhile, St John’s School students Mohd Faisal Hishamuddin, Wafa Wafiqah Putri Rano Gusman and Nadiratul Ain Abdullah Dewata were elated to have won the first runner-up position in the School Project category.
“We created an app that promotes fitness. Called the Ultimate Fit Challenge, it features information guidelines on how to be fit and attractive.”
Two months was invested into research work, while the app development took a mere 10 days. The team hopes to add additional features to make it stand out.
A team from Universiti Teknologi Brunei, the first runner-up in the Tertiary Project category, hopes to market their Smartshower 2.0, a water saving device, after finding the perfect pattern for the showerhead.
Believing there is market potential for this, they are at present focussed on making it more appealing, and performing research and development to be able to upgrade it further.
Team member Chang Wei Hau explained that the water saving device is self-generated with a hydro generator in the showerhead, which can power its own electricity without any extra power source.
Chang highlighted that without the support of BAG Networks, Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB) and their mentor Mohd Lee who provided his mentorship, their win would not have materialized.
