THE winners of the Brunei Info-Communication Technology Awards (BICTA) 2016 were honoured yesterday at a prize presentation ceremony at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas.
Gracing the event was His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Deputy Sultan.
The ceremony began with the arrival of His Royal Highness at the ICC, which was followed with a recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and a welcoming address by Minister of Communications Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Mustappa bin Haji Sirat.
A report presentation on BICTA 2016 was delivered by chief judge Dr Yong Chee Tuan, in which he noted the large number of entries in this year’s competition, with 13 entries in the ICT Industry category, 20 in Tertiary Project and 19 in School Project.
“Over the years, selecting the most innovative products among the wide range of entries in each of the three categories has remained one of the most challenging processes, with the judging system and methodology for BICTA based entirely on the Judging Manual used in the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance Award Competition (APICTA),” he said.
Following the report presentation, His Royal Highness consented to present tokens of appreciation to the BICTA 2016 judges, as well as prizes and awards to the winners of the competition.
Chung Hwa Middle School (CHMS) was awarded the prestigious Royal Patron Award for its ‘BHealth’ app.
CHMS also won first place in the School Project category for the ‘BHealth’ app, while the Tertiary Project category was won by Universiti Teknologi Brunei for its ‘DFMS – Deployable Flood Management System’.
The winner of the ICT Industry category went to Nagender Aneja for his ‘OffAT-Chat in Airplane Mode’.
Meanwhile, in the Special Awards category, prizes for Young Developers went to Seri Mulia Sarjana School for the product, ‘Augmented Reality of Brunei Tourism’, and to CHMS for its ‘Saviour’ project.
The Promising Entrepreneurs awards went to Mohammad Effendy for his ‘Box-ITB’ item and to Science College Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan for its ‘Student Transport Monitoring System’ project.
The Emerging Technology award was presented to Universiti Teknologi Brunei for its ‘Twitter Sentiment Analytic’ project.
For this year’s competition, a panel of 17 judges was selected from government agencies, academia, ICT-related organisations and professional bodies representing the authority and expertise in their respective fields.
