MODERN lifestyle is susceptible to external forces which are at times incompatible with Syariah law and local Muslim culture, said His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Deputy Sultan.

His Royal Highness was delivering a sabda during the 4th Convocation Ceremony of the Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (ITQSHHB) yesterday, at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas.

“Globalisation and the rapid pace of info-communication technology has exposed the public to corrupt messages and ideologies which undermine religious faith, society and the sanctity of Islam,” said His Royal Highness.

“The country therefore needs a Huffaz (Al-Quran experts) generation that is dedicated and always ready to contribute actively towards community development.”

His Royal Highness then reminded the new graduates of their role in society, by quoting a Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh): “The best among you are those who learn Al-Quran and then teach it to others.”

The Deputy Sultan also urged the ITQSHHB graduates to uphold Islamic teachings in accordance with the principles of ‘Maqasid Syariah’, in order to preserve the sanctity of the religion.

“It will also establish harmony among people, which leads to the forming of a progressive community,” said His Royal Highness.

“As a step forward, a Huffaz generation needs to be empowered in conformity with the responsibilities and assurance of upholding Islam; and as Islamic scholars, they should promote and share their knowledge of Al-Quran and the Hadith.”

His Royal Highness concluded the sabda by congratulating the graduates on their success, and also expressed the hope they would work hard to strengthen Islamic teachings for the benefit of the community and the country.
