THE Takbir Hari Raya Aidiladha reverberated across mosques and suraus across the country last night with the focus at Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah, heralding the start of Hari Raya Aidiladha, also commonly termed in Brunei as Hari Raya Korban (Feast of Sacrifice) and Hari Raya Haji.
Hari Raya Aidiladha is one of the two holy festivals of Islam with the other being Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Hari Raya Korban corresponds to the Haj season. It honours the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh) to sacrifice his son, as an act of submission to Allah the Almighty’s command, before Allah then intervened by sending the Malaikat Jibril and informed him that his sacrifice has already been accepted.
Muslims throughout the country welcomed the festive day with special prayers last night beginning after Isyak at 8.45pm, with the main activity focused at the country’s iconic mosque – Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah in the capital.
Men in different coloured traditional Malay clothing Cara Melayu and women in white Telekung (women prayer attire) streamed into the mosque early to take the opportunity to participate in the mass Maghrib prayers, as well as making sure to secure their spot for the Aidiladha prayers.
Attending the prayers at Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah was Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman, Minister of Religious Affairs. Also present during the ceremony were Dato Paduka Awang Haji Abdul Mokti bin Haji Mohd Daud, Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, and other top officials from the Ministry of Religious Affairs and other ministries.
To enliven the event, members of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, students of Religious Teachers University College of Seri Begawan (KUPU SB), Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) and students of Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah also participated in the event.
