AL IDRUS Junior FT were declared newly crowned Brunei DST Premier League champions after Menglait FC were beaten 6-4 by Setia Perdana at the Tutong Sports Complex on Sunday.

Menglait, who have already secured promotion to Brunei’s top division, needed a victory to keep their title hopes alive but found themselves a mountain to climb after Setia Perdana ran away with a commanding 4-0 half-time lead.

Hamirul Hashim opened the scoring in the 8th minute before Aimmil Rahman doubled the lead with a 12th minute penalty.

Setia Perdana’s main man Faisal Ali extended the lead to 3-0 in the 28th minute before Aimmil made an even grimmer outlook with his team’s fourth five minutes before the interval.

Awangku Muhd Nurhidayat pulled one back for the title-chasing Menglait FC after converting a 53rd minute penalty.

Faisal completed his hat-trick with further goals in the 63rd and 73rd minute to make it 6-1 and with 17 minutes to go Menglait were left dead and buried.

However, Menglait fought back valiantly as Nurhidayat initiated the start of an unlikely comeback with an 87th minute strike.

Nurhidayat scored in the 88th and 90th minute but were in vain as Setia Perdana held on for the victory.

Al Idrus’ coronation as second tier champions should take place on Saturday after their match against IKLS FC at the Berakas Sports Complex.

The Premier League winners are also looking to preserve their unbeaten status having only dropped points once in a thrilling 3-3 draw against BSRC FT.
