TWO senior behavioural supervisors from Learning Ladders Society have left the country yesterday to attend the 8th Conference of the European Association for Behaviour Analysis.
Hui Min Lim and Francisca Lee Bix Sie will take part in the internationally acclaimed conference from September 14 to 17 at the Kore University of Enna, Sicily, Italy.
A consultant from the Learning Ladders Society, Dr Douglas Lee, will also take part in the event alongside the two supervisors.
Hui Min Lim and Francisca Lee Bix Sie told the Bulletin that they will present two working papers at the conference, and will also make a presentation on the Learning Ladders Society.
Furthermore, they will explain how the evidence-based approach known as Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) is helping children with autism and other neurological disorders at Learning Ladders, and what have been done at the centre to help the children.
Additionally, the knowledge and information gained from the conference will be utilised and practised at the centre, they said.
The supervisors’ papers will include discussions on the challenges faced by the ABA-approach in Brunei, training and developing the centre’s staff in terms of skills, knowledge and other technical researches.

They also told the Bulletin that countries like the United States, for example, have a more open society and their government has stated that ABA is an effective programme for autistic children, while parents have been encouraged to adopt this treatment programme.
In Brunei, awareness in autism and how to face neurological disorders are sorely lacking, and Learning Ladders Society is doing its best to ensure more information will reach the general public in terms of the condition’s management and treatment as well as other relevant issues, they added.
Nur Azimah binti Said, the Public Relations Officer of Learning Ladders Society, informed that the Special Education Unit is interested in how Learning Ladders Society implements the ABA approach, and wants to learn how this approach can be utilised in schools’ educational system.
The 8th Conference of the European Association for Behaviour Analysis (EABA) is organised by the European Association for Behaviour Analysis – an international organisation that aims to promote Behaviour Analysis in Europe and provide an international forum within Europe for the study and discussion of matters relevant to such analysis.
One of the EABA’s main functions is to organise congresses in experimental and applied behaviour analysis. Presently, EABA is held every two years.
Learning Ladders Society has actively participated in several international conferences globally to present research findings and share its knowledge, as well as to learn from other ABA practitioners from other parts of the world.
