A GROUP of students from Brunei Darussalam left for Singapore to participate in two reality programmes, Xpedisi Siswa and GRID, co-produced by Radio Televisyen Brunei (RTB) and MediaCorp.

Xpedisi Siswa is a one hour reality TV programme which seeks to challenge the participants’ ability to adapt to new environments and apply their soft skills through experiential learning.

Each team of five members comprising one mentor, four undergraduates and students from both Brunei Darussalam and Singapore, and producers from Brunei Darussalam are taking part in the annual reality TV programmes.

For 2016, under the theme of ‘Volunteerism’, Xpedisi Siswa focuses on three main activities which relate to environmental preservation; Clean and Care Pulau Ubin, Mangrove Planting and Operation Deadline.

The group leader for the Xpedisi Siswa reality TV programme is Nor Hasimah binti Haji Bungsu, Executive Producer of Xpedisi Siswa 2016.

She said this year’s theme is ‘Volunteerism’ that focuses on the conservation of the environment.

This is the 7th time undergraduates from Brunei Darussalam are taking part for the Xpedisi Siswa reality TV programme.

The participants will be put to the challenge on issues of the environment, and they will be going to Pulau Ubin as part of the challenge, she explained.

This experience in terms of skills and knowledge will hopefully enable them to put into application when they come back to Brunei, and help to conserve and protect the environment, Nor Hasimah added.

The other reality programme, GRID, is a youth oriented programme which features the participants sharing their knowledge and creativity in developing ideas, at the same time understanding each other’s culture and interest in the arts and other scenes, that are of interest to the youth community.

For 2016, GRID features the theme ‘Culinary Arts’ which focuses on four main projects; Food Preparation, Food Presentation, Nutritional Value, and Cleanliness and Etiquette.

The group leader for this reality TV programme is Nor Hanishah binti Haji Mohd Yusop.

Amongst the main objectives in the challenge is to foster a close relationship between the groups of Brunei and Singapore, and to gain knowledge and skills from what they learnt in the Singapore challenge, she said.

This is the 5th year that students are taking part in the GRID reality TV programme, where the participants consist of pre-university students that included Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE) Sultan Saiful Rijal Campus students, she explained.

“We have selected IBTE Sultan Saiful Rijal Campus students from a large pool of students of other institutions as they fit the criteria perfectly in what we were looking for in the preparation of food,” she added.

She said their team of GRID challengers will bring traditional food from Brunei Darussalam such as ambuyat and sayur tebadak and introduce these foods to their Singaporean counterparts, and give them a slight “taste of Brunei”.

At the reality TV programmes, the guests of honour from Brunei will be Mohammed Riza bin Dato Paduka Haji Mohammed Yunos, Permanent Secretary (Media and Cabinet) at the Prime Minister’s Office, and from Singapore, Associate Professor Faishal Ibrahim, Parliamentary Secretary, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Social and Family Development, Singapore.

Haji Muhammad Suffian bin Haji Bungsu, Director of RTB and Zakiah Halim from MediaCorp will also attend the programmes which will be recorded live from The New MediaCorp Campus on Friday, September 23.

The programmes are annual co-production programmes by RTB and MediaCorp commissioned under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Government of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam and the Government of the Republic of Singapore in the field of broadcasting. Both programmes will be broadcasted in Brunei Darussalam and Singapore.
