MAJORITY of the community in Brunei lacks the undestanding of the basic principles of first aid when compared to those in neighbouring countries such as Singapore and Malaysia, an issue which needs to be addressed.

This was said by Sheikh Haji Abdul Kadir bin Abdullah, Secretary General of the Brunei Darussalam Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), during an interview with the media on the side-lines of the World First Aid Day celebration which was held yesterday at the Oil and Gas Discovery Centre in Seria organised by the BDRCS Belait District branch.

Present as guest of honour was Dr Ahmad Fakhri bin Haji Junaidi, Head of Medical Officer of Panaga Health Centre, who also officiated the launch with the international theme ‘First Aid is for Everyone, Everywhere’.

Activities related to disseminating information on First Aid was held which include two forum sessions in the morning delivered by the BDRCS Academy titled ‘First Aid for All and Its Role in The Community’ and ‘Basic First Aid Treatment Procedures’ while a briefing on the training modules and first aid for the Executive Committee members of the BDRCS Belait District branch.

“In the five years of our strategic plan, we want at least one individual in every household who understands and is able to perform first aid,” said the secretary general while mentioning that the person does not have to be a certified first aider but have general knowledge of first aid.

“Our objective is to make sure our community, especially in the Mukims and villages, can help save lives in any situation,” added Sheikh Haji Abdul Kadir as he further elaborated that the BDRCS Academy, which has been accredited by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, has started its movement in organising various courses, workshops, training seminars and others especially at disseminating first aid knowledge.
