A MASSIVE cleaning campaign was carried out in a number of areas in Bandar Seri Begawan involving members of the public and those from various government agencies.
The campaign aimed to raise awareness on the importance of cleanliness in the surrounding environment especially in villages, popular locations and tourist destinations. The campaign also targeted drainages and waterways leading to rivers.
Among the targeted areas of the cleaning campaign were those surrounding Kampong Tamoi as well as the Duli Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah Mosque.
Pengarah Haji Mokti bin Md Salleh, Penghulu of Mukim Tamoi, in his remark, urged participating villagers under Mukim Tamoi to work together with the village head to ensure that surrounding areas remain clean. He also urged villagers to call out anyone seen throwing rubbish in public areas.
He hoped that the members of the consultative council of Mukim Tamoi will also work together in maintaining the village’s cleanliness.
Meanwhile, in taking stern action towards irresponsible companies or individuals, the Law Enforcement Unit of the BSB Municipal Department issued two compound fines of $500 each to two private companies found to have left waste and rubbish in public.
Under the Minor Offences Act, Chapter 30 of Section 12 (1), the storing or disposal of any items in public places is an offence. The company, which was levied with the compound fine, must have it settled within seven days.
If the company fails to settle the fine, the matter will be referred to court and if found guilty, the punishment will be a $1,000 fine or a month’s imprisonment for the first convicted offence. For the subsequent offence, the punishment will be a $3,000 fine or imprisonment of not more than three months.
The Law Enforcement Unit of the BSB Municipal Department and the District Office urged companies to maintain the cleanliness of their premises as well as to comply with the various regulations under the Minor Offences Act.
Villagers, shop owners and the rest of the public are urged to take initiatives in maintaining the cleanliness of their surrounding environment especially in the capital as it was recently declared as the Asean City of Culture.
