HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam yesterday emphasised the importance for Bruneians studying in Malaysia to always remember their purpose for being in that country which is to focus wholeheartedly on their studies.

“This opportunity must be used to develop self-identity and personality,” His Majesty said in a titah at a get-together ceremony with citizens and residents of Brunei Darussalam who are currently in Malaysia.

According to His Majesty, the analogy of this is like sowing a seed. “We must plant good seeds to ensure that we reap good and satisfactory harvest.”

Also present at the get-together ceremony was Her Majesty Duli Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha binti Al-Marhum Pengiran Pemancha Pengiran Anak Haji Mohamed Alam. Accompanying Their Majesties were His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Wakeel; Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah; Her Royal Highness Princess Ameerah Wardatul Bolkiah; and Her Royal Highness Princess Hajah Masna, Ambassador-at-Large at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

His Majesty said students must also be able to choose and evaluate wisely. “The best choice for students is to be a ‘Patriotic Graduate’. This requires strong determination and steadfast approach. On top of that we need to choose a right track. The track here is the identity to be used.”

His Majesty added, “For Bruneians, Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB) is our identity. This identity has to be used wherever we are and not for it to be changed with others.

“For example, in the field of culture, it is not wrong for us to know and learn the culture of other people, as it is also part of knowledge. However, this does not mean we adopt it, as there is already MIB as our identity.

“The same thing also applies in religion and religious practices. We can see and learn how other people practise theirs but for Bruneians, the practice has to be referred to our identity of MIB, which specified the religion as ‘Islam according to Ahli Sunnah Wal’ Jama’ah.”
