A BRUNEIAN speaker featured at the 3rd Borneo Youth Leadership Conference in East Malaysia, which took place at Curtin University, Sarawak on October 1.

Delwin Keasberry, the Commercial and Prosperity Manager at the British High Commission in Brunei Darussalam is a three-time TEDx speaker and a Bruneian social media personality, also known as @BruneiTweet on Twitter and Instagram.

He has participated in various forums including Brunei’s National Environment Conference, the Asean 100 Leadership Forum in Manila, and the Asean Social Media Exchange in Thailand. In 2014, he was selected to represent Brunei at the Australia-Asean Emerging Leaders Programme.

In a press release, it was shared that Delwin spoke alongside a number of other speakers at the Borneo Youth Leadership Conference, including: Lucy Chan, The Golden Space Training Centre; Aw Tai Hau, Pott Glasses; Edan Syah, Malaysian Marathon Runner; Jacinta Johnson, Jacinta Johnson Media and Design; Kasmariza Kasim, TalentCorp; Alfred Netto, The Wolf Trainer; Rashvin Pal Singh, Biji-Biji Initiative; Resh, Singer and Songwriter; Yasmin Rasyid, EcoKnights; and Vinodh Menon, Founder of Flying V Events and the Borneo Youth Leadership Conference.

Delwin was invited to speak about how to effectively use our digital voice through social media. Speaking on his experience at the conference, he said, “The central theme of my talk was about leadership and taking responsibility for things which matters to us. I shared lessons learnt about how we can use social media to build communities both online and offline.

“I examined a few case studies of how social media was used to support good causes, for example through crowd-funding campaigns. I shared how social media was a tool that can be used for the right and wrong reasons, for example building a community versus cyber-bullying and harassment. I then shared practical considerations on the effective use of social media: Allocations versus aspirations; building your network; knowing your audience. Finally, I challenged the audience to take action and work on a project (on an issue which mattered to them) within the next 30 days,” he added.

Vinodh Menon, Founder of Flying V Events and the Borneo Youth Leadership Conference also shared, “The key highlights of the conference were the ‘Selling Cupcakes’ exercise that pushed our delegates out of their comfort zone and into the streets to raise funds for a local who had lost her home. Through this exercise they were able to communicate to our delegates that their actions could impact the life of someone else.”

On the speakers he added, “This year we had a panel of speakers who were a lot younger, which made them relatable to the delegates. The topics they spoke on resonated with many of our delegates and helped enhance their experience at every session. We selected speakers based on the challenges facing the millennial generation.”

When asked about leadership, Menon said, “Our goal at the Borneo Youth Leadership Conference is to inspire our delegates to take control of their lives. Leadership to us is being the hero of your own story, deciding for yourself the path you want to take and working towards it with a level of stubbornness that is admirable. Leadership isn’t something esoteric, it is something innate in all of us and we want our delegates to know that being a leader, is simply deciding for yourself that your destiny if up to you.”

This year the Borneo Youth Leadership Conference welcomed participants from Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, India, Australia and Pakistan, most of who are within the age range of 20 to 25 years, and are undergraduates.

The Borneo Youth Leadership Conference 2016 was co-organised by Flying V Events and Curtin Sarawak Student Council 2016, and supported by Crowe Horwath. More information about the Borneo Youth Leadership Conference can be found at www.borneoyouthleadership.com.
