THE role of international relations of a government with other governments in strengthening and developing a nation’s progress is found recorded in the history of human civilisations.
Studies have proven the important role of scholars of Islam in the archipelago and in the context of Johor Bahru and Brunei Darussalam, the relationship between the two countries have been long established in both the monarchy and the people.
This was stated by Dr Haji Abdul Kadir bin NC Mohamad, Researcher and Translator of the Brunei History Centre, in his speech at the fourth series of the ‘PenBorneo 2016’ talk held yesterday at the Borneo Research Centre in Anggerek Desa.
The talk titled, ‘Role and Contribution of the late Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Seri Utama (Dr) Haji Ismail bin Omar Abdul Aziz in Religious Education in Brunei Darussalam’, was a working paper which examined the role of the late scholar, in upholding the teachings of Islam through strengthening education and religious administration.
The event was organised by the Borneo Research Centre in efforts to spread the importance of history and promote ‘PenBorneo’ as the selected destination to do research and studies in line with its vision and mission.
According to Dr Haji Abdul Kadir, Yang Dimuliakan Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Dato Seri Utama (Dr) Haji Ismail’s research methodology was based on a qualitative approach which included reviews of literature and interviews.
In the context of Islamic education in Brunei, the late scholar was instrumental in the development of religious education from the basic level, which was proved through the establishment of the first formal religious school in 1956, followed by the establishment of Arabic streams in religious schools.
He added that the late scholar’s Fatwa also played a significant role in the development of Islamic education and administration either in terms of physical development or the basic education of the country.
Through his studies, education and Islamic administration in Brunei were successfully strengthened through diplomatic relations between the Governments of Johor Darul Ta’zim and Brunei Darussalam.
His dedication and effort showed his stance on the importance of a holistic administration as a basis to prepare the next generation of quality Islamic scholars and leaders in the future.
Besides promoting ‘PenBorneo’ as a research centre for history and reference, the event also gave a clear understanding to government officers, undergraduates and the public on the importance of learning historic knowledge and research.
The talk was attended by officers from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Brunei Museums Department, Language and Literature Bureau, Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali and Universiti Brunei Darussalam students.
