TWO separate car accidents on Friday evening and yesterday afternoon claimed the lives of two women on Brunei roads, bringing the toll of road fatalities so far this year to 10.
In the first incident, a 25-year-old woman was killed in a late Friday evening collision at the Kampong Madang-Sungai Akar Highway, the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) confirmed.
The mishap which was reported at about 9.48pm on Friday, involved a four-wheel drive vehicle that reportedly lost control and hit road barriers and a lamp post.
The young woman, who was a Brunei permanent resident, suffered a blow to her head and broke her arms upon the impact, police said. She was rushed to the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital where she was pronounced dead. Police said they are still investigating the cause of the accident.
In the second incident, a 51-year-old woman died in a tragic accident which occurred yesterday afternoon at the Telisai-Lumut Highway.
The RBPF said they received a call about the mishap in the vicinity of a U-turn near the exit to Bukit Puan at 1.13pm.
The saloon vehicle was driven by a 58-year-old permanent resident man who suffered injuries on his right eyebrow and toe.
A 19-year-old male was also in the vehicle who received injuries on his stomach and feet.
The deceased passenger suffered severe injury on the head and wounds all over her body, police said.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation, they added.
Brunei has recorded eight road deaths till the end of July 2016, according to the Land Transport Department (JPD). The fatalities were caused by 1,926 road mishaps recorded up to July 31 this year.
Statistics compiled by the Fire and Rescue Department in 2015 shows increased number of road fatalities in the Sultanate, showing a total of 15 deaths from January to November 2015 compared to 10 fatalities in the whole of 2014.
The RBPF has intensified police presence across the nation to ensure the safety of all road users, with numerous road blocks and regular patrols being carried out at Brunei’s main roads on a regular basis.
The RBPF is urging motorists to take extra precautions, reminding drivers to keep below the speed limit, refrain from using mobile phones while driving and to wear seat belts at all times. They also advise road users not to drive when they are feeling tired and to plan their travel routes well ahead of time.
