DSP United will be aiming to repeat their deep run in the Brunei DST FA Cup last year and reach the quarter-finals or even better following their 2-0 victory over Telbru FT at the Berakas Sports Complex yesterday.
The non-league side, who also came close of securing a dream ticket to the Brunei DST Premier League, crashed out in the third round in penalties to a developmental national side Tabuan Muda last year.
However, DSP United are focused to build another impressive journey despite several personnel switching clubs.
“We’re hoping to reach as far as we can. We have a new squad and some old players have moved to new teams,” said team manager Hafiz Damit in an interview with the Bulletin after the victory.
Exciting times lies ahead for the club with the acquisition of young players who are determined to make inroads in the country’s elite cup competition.
“We have a really young squad now who shows good commitment. We’re hoping to reach the quarterfinals or even better,” the team manager added.
The club will not be too concerned on the lack of preparation despite the absence of competitive games while the league teams were competing week in and week out in the top two divisions.
DSP United, who will be trying again to qualify for Brunei’s second tier, have trained for five or six months specifically for the tournament.
Md Hafiy Danan gave DSP United the lead in the 38th minute before Md Fawzan @ Hafiz Haji Abu Kassim completed the scoring in the 62nd minute.
Meanwhile in the other Brunei DST FA Cup match, last season’s surprise package Hawa FT overcame Pandan XIV 3-1 at the Track and Field Sports Complex.
Safwan Juhar netted twice within half an hour before Md Kasyul Azim halved the deficit in the 75th minute.
Md Fikri scored late on in stoppage time for Hawa to all but send his side to the second round of the competition.
