SOME 105 units of portable solar-powered LED lamps were distributed and installed into 26 households in remote rural villages in Tutong by Schneider Electric in collaboration with 14 business partners yesterday.
The initiative was part of the Schneider Electric Asia-Pacific wide ‘Light It Up’ programme, a campaign to help bring access to electricity in rural areas, where portable solar-powered LED lamps were distributed to rural communities across 12 countries in the Asia-Pacific.
Schneider Electric, a global specialist in energy management and automation, holds this annual campaign as its corporate social responsibility efforts from mid-September to early November, where its employees will distribute ‘Mobiya’ solar lamps to rural communities in 12 countries across the region.
This was the first time that the programme was carried out in Brunei.
In Brunei, a delegation from Schneider and its business partners went to remote Ulu Tutong areas in Kg Benutan, Kg Supon Besar and Kg Mapol. The areas involved have limited access to electricity. Upon recommendation from the Rotary Club Bandar Seri Begawan, Schneider Electric and its partners aimed to equip each household with ‘Mobiya’ solar lamps to improve the lighting situation for late night studying and to increase the safety for night time transportation.
Among those present in the delegation to the villages included the President of Schneider Electric Brunei, Jeffrey Yap and several representatives from its business partners. The delegation also demonstrated and installed the lights at each recipient’s house.
