SPECIAL Olympics Brunei Darussalam (SOBD) athletes, Khairul Amzar bin Khalid and Syamsiah binti Takong, have made the country proud by winning three medals at the 6th TAFISA World Sports for All Games in Jakarta.
The pair won silver in the unified bocce team category, and two respective bronzes for the male and female categories in unified bocce.
Khairul Amzar and Syamsiah partnered with two other athletes without disabilities, Nabil bin Esa and Subinoorhayati Bibi, during the unified bocce team finals.
In an interview, head coach Suhaili bin Mohammad Yusoff said, “We are proud of the athletes and their partnered performances, but we could have gotten better results if the conditions of the court and time of the championship had been based on the bocce time standard.
“Actually, our athletes were well-prepared and ready for the competition, but they needed more time to get used to the court, which was in poor condition,” he said.
Around 12,000 participants from 110 member countries are participating in the six-day meet, which carries the theme of ‘Unity in Diversity’, under the patronage of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
