THE second week of ‘Bandarku Ceria’ (My Happy City) saw the participation of more people from all walks of life spending quality time with families and friends. The ‘Bandarku Ceria’ initiative, which was launched on October 2, is an event held every Sunday where the busy capital city of Bandar Seri Begawan closes its roads to traffic for four hours from 6am until 10am.
This gives people the opportunity to enjoy the sights and sounds of the capital city, take leisurely strolls on the empty roads and do other healthy activities such as aerobics, cycling and tai chi without having to worry about traffic. The initiative has also given people more reasons to come visit the capital in the early hours of Sunday to participate in healthy activities with friend and families or to browse the wares of the street vendors.
To ensure the smooth running of the four-hour event, a number of traffic police were posted at several designated areas.
In an interview, one of the supporters of the ‘Bandarku Ceria’ initiative, Nursarah Delila said that it was encouraging to see more people come and spend their Sunday mornings in the capital.
“Usually most people would do their sports or activities at tracks or recreational areas even at the beach. Now we can do the same in the capital. We can also share with our children family history such as where their grandparents used to live in Kampong Ayer and how Bandar Seri Begawan has developed. My family and I brought our bicycles to ride around the town and it is such a happy time,” she added.
