THE Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, mentioned Brunei Darussalam’s ‘Dasar Belia Negara’ (DBN) 2002 plan during the ‘3rd Session of the Islamic Conference of Youth and Sports Ministers’ in Istanbul. In his speech, he said that DBN 2002 revolves around the importance of youth and that it represents a long-term plan to establish ‘Belia Brunei Cemerlang’ (Brunei’s successful youths).
He stated that there would be six areas where youths in institutions, both government and private, will work on high impact projects which include: ‘Education and development’, ‘youth employment and training’, ‘leadership’, ‘effort’, ‘international understanding’ and ‘service to others and important countries’.
The conference which was held on October 6 and 7 was themed ‘Empowering Youth for Peace, Solidarity and Development’ and brought together ministers responsible for youth and sports from member countries of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to find solutions to major global youth issues.
The minister went on to say that the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports sees the need to create a more holistic DBN that will have integrated approaches to addressing youth issues. It is a strategy towards improving the implementation mechanisms at various levels for consultation, coordination, monitoring and evaluation of the programmes to be more effective and inclusive.
Commenting on the OIC Youth Strategy and Youth Policy Joint Initiatives and OIC Sport Strategy, the minister said that it was a guide towards the development of youth and sports programmes to be on the right track.
According to minister, currently in Brunei Darussalam there are plenty of beneficial programmes for youths such as ‘skills training for livelihood’, ‘instilling a sense of belonging’, ‘building strong family relations as the basic unit of society’, ‘changing minds and building a culture of independence’ among youths.
Meanwhile, the preparation of the activities in the field of sport and recreation through the provision of sports facilities and new leisure programmes aims to prevent youths from engaging in unhealthy activities. The initiative in organising after-school and work-in-youth centre activities assist in the youths’ personal and social development.
