Asterawani celebrates member’s success

A THANKSGIVING ceremony was held yesterday by the Brunei Darussalam Association of Writers (Asterawani) at Jeruton Hotel, Jerudong to celebrate the success of one its members receiving the Literature Award at the recent Mastera Awards 2016 in Malaysia.

Associate Professor Ampuan Dr Haji Brahim bin Ampuan Haji Tengah, Chairman 1 of Asterawani, delivered a welcoming speech to congratulate Dr Hajah Rayah binti Md Ali who received the award for her book ‘Syair Kenangan karya Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien: Satu Analisis’.

“This nomination is a huge honour for Dr Hajah Rayah as well as Brunei writers in general who write non-creative works,” said Associate Professor Ampuan Dr Haji Brahim.

He said the Mastera Awards began in 1999 to honour creative and non-creative writers with Badaruddin HO as the first Bruneian awardee for his work ‘Episod-Episod Si Awang’.

This year’s Mastera Awards has changed in format to award non-creative works (or academic work) for each country which chose two candidates to be evaluated. Dr Hajah Rayah was selected as a worthy awardee.

Dr Hajah Rayah’s book which was published by the Language and Literature Bureau in 2012 analyses the works, views and visions of the late Sultan.
