MEMBERS of the public, especially youths, are welcome to join His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam to participate in the recreational cycling activity which is scheduled to be held on this Sunday in conjunction with the 46th anniversary of the change of name of Bandar Brunei to Bandar Seri Begawan as well as the 11th National Youth Day.
Details of the activity, which is also part of the ‘Bandarku Ceria’ initiative held every Sunday, were revealed in a press conference co-chaired by Dato Paduka Dr Haji Affendy bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Mohd Yusof, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, along with officials from relevant agencies.
“This is a historical event and we hope that members of the public will come out for the recreational cycling activity. This is not a competition, so everyone is welcome to participate on this Sunday,” Dato Paduka Dr Haji Affendy said. The activity will take place on October 30 from 6.30am and at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien.
The cycling event will cover a number of roads in the capital pass several iconic buildings and historical places such as the Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Mosque, Lapau and Royal Regalia Building. The streets that will be used include Jalan Elizabeth II, Jalan Masjid Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien, Jalan McArthur, Jalan Kianggeh, Jalan Tasek, Jalan Sekolah, Jalan Kumbang Pasang, Jalan Perdana Menteri and Jalan Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS).
“Members of the public who want to participate in the activity should arrive at the venue early on Sunday and take precautionary safety measures while cycling,” Abdul Mutalib urged.
“It is hoped that the recreational cycling activity will promote a healthy lifestyle among people for them to support the aspiration of becoming healthy nation. Also, it can further enliven the ‘Bandarku Ceria’ programme which started on October 2 and is held every Sunday.”
This Sunday, public can expect a wide range of activities in the capital. All districts will showcase their unique products made under the One Village, One Product initiative.
The Ministry of Health has requested members of the public to wear pink colour shirts, as October is being celebrated as breast cancer awareness month. There will also be showcases from local higher education institutions, namely: Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE), Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) and Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) as well as youth corners.
Meanwhile, Haji Omar Ali bin Haji Ibrahim, Secretary-General of Brunei Darussalam Cycling Federation touched on the distance (11.287 km) as well as the route of the cycling that will start off and finish at Taman Haji Sir Muda Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien. He advised the cyclists to use proper safety gears such as helmet and proper sports attire. Participants are also urged to use hand signals while overtaking.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Mohd Fadillah bin Haji Abdul Hamid from Traffic Control and Investigation Department under the Royal Brunei Police Force explained that traffic on the roads will be strictly controlled from 6am onwards.
Participants are also advised to arrive early to park their vehicles at designated areas, namely: Jalan Bendahara, Royal Regalia Building, Batu Satu car parks, Taman Jubilee, Syariah Courts building and Jame’ ‘Asr Hassanil Bolkiah parking areas.
The roads that will be closed temporarily are Jalan Kianggeh heading to Kumbang Pasang, Jalan Haji Basil, Jalan Perdana Menteri, Jalan Sekolah and Jalan RIPAS.
