TWO Bruneian speakers came out top in the Humorous Speech and Evaluation categories of the Toastmasters International Semi-Annual District 87 Conference, which was held over the weekend at The Rizqun International Hotel.
Boon Kiat Ang won the Humorous Speech contest, with Dunstan Chan and Irene Widjaya in second and third place respectively. Meanwhile, Pooja Shivand placed first in the Evaluation category, with Donna E Tan and Yusuf Chandra coming in respectively as the first and second runner-ups.
The two-day event featured 30 English and Mandarin contestants from Brunei, Labuan, East Malaysia and Indonesia, who were required to deliver five to seven minutes of humorous speeches and a three-minute evaluation before a panel of experienced toastmasters.
Several public speakers, trainers and industrial leaders also took part in the conference, including the former president of Toastmasters International, Mohammed Murad, together with world champions Dananjaya J Hettiarachchi and Darren Tay.
Other featured speakers included Soon Loo, the CEO of DARE (Darussalam Enterprise); and Stuart Lee, a productive trainer and consultant.
The conference was also attended by Lu Li Ming from Sandakan and Liw Hui Peng from Bintulu, for the Mandarin session.
Toastmasters International is a non-profit educational organisation that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network. Headquartered in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, the organisation’s membership exceeds 313,000 in more than 14,650 clubs in 126 countries.
District 87 is a region of Toastmasters International which comprises around 165 corporate and community clubs across Brunei, East Malaysia and Indonesia.
The event was jointly supported by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism.
