Sultan consents to visit Breast Cancer Awareness campaign

HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam consented to visit the Breast Cancer Awareness Month Campaign that took place yesterday during the Bandarku Ceria initiative at the capital.

Accompanying His Majesty was His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, and the Minister of Health, Dato Seri Setia Dr Awang Haji Zulkarnain bin Haji Hanafi.

The campaign was hosted by the Brunei Cancer Centre with the support of the Ministry of Health, Brunei Cancer Support Group as well as volunteers from Universiti Brunei Darussalam, and Institute of Brunei Technical Education (IBTE).

In an interview with the Bulletin, a breast surgeon at Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital, highlighted that the campaign aimed to raise public awareness and promote healthy living.

She also said that people shouldn’t be ashamed to be health conscious about breast health and in taking care of oneself.

Medical Director and Consultant Surgeon at The Brunei Cancer Centre, Dr Kenneth Kok, emphasised in an interview the importance of community awareness to avoid creating a stigma for cancer patients.

The society should support them in their time of need, he said.

He also highlighted the positive public support for the ongoing awareness campaigns in schools and public sectors.

According to statistics, by October 2016, there was an increase of breast cancer patients in Brunei where 801 female patients were listed in the past 10 years.

The public are advised to visit health centres for check-ups and mammogram scans.

Also at the event was an aerobics session attended by the Ministry of Health and The Brunei Cancer Centre officers and staff, as well as members of the public and an exhibition on Breast Cancer Awareness.
