DPMM FC’s striker Rafael Ramazotti has been awarded the RHB Top Scorer Award for a second consecutive year in the S League Awards Night 2016 at the Marina Bay Sands in Singapore last night.
The free-scoring Brazilian enjoyed a prolific season with 20 goals to his name including a couple of hat-tricks in the league against Garena Young Lions and Balestier Khalsa.
Albirex Niigata (S) were unsurprisingly the biggest winners of the night after claiming a quartet of awards for Player of The Year, Coach of The Year, Singapore Pools Fair Play Award and Goal of The Year.
Albirex’s hitman Atsushi Kawata scooped the prestigious Great Eastern Player of The Year award after helping his club to their maiden S League title and producing a string of impressive performances in a hugely successful season.
The Japanese forward netted 13 league goals including a four-goal masterclass against Garena Young Lions and completed eight assists as well as 16 completed league games under his belt.
There were no major surprises either for RHB Coach of The Year as Albirex Niigata (S) tactician Naoki Naruo deservedly picked up the accolade with last year’s recipient DPMM FC head coach Steve Kean and Hougang United FC’s K Balagumaran making the three-man shortlist.
The Japanese coach guided the White Swans to an unprecedented quadruple after winning the Singapore Community Shield, Singapore League Cup, S League and the Singapore Cup.
M Anumanthan, who started in each of his 22 appearances for Hougang United FC this term, succeeded last year’s winner DPMM FC’s Azwan Ali Rahman for the Yeo’s Young Player of the Year gong.
Tomoki Menda’s sensational strike from an unlikely position for Albirex Niigata (S) against Garena Young Lions helped him scoop the Mitre Goal of the Year award besting a list of stunning goals from team-mates Kawata and Shuto Inaba, Hougang United FC’s Iqbal Hussain and DPMM FC striker Rafael Ramazotti.
Sukhbir Singh won the FBT Referee of the Year while the Yeo’s Assistant Referee of the Year award went to Ong Chai Lee.
Warriors FC Fan Club, who had little to cheer about in the 2016 season, were announced as The New Paper Fan Club of the Year.
Chua Siang Yee of The Straits Times won POLAR Story of the Year for his captivating piece entitled ‘Pennant Looking To Start Over in Singapore’ ousting his rivals from The New Paper, Berita Harian and FourFourTwo.
The sports journalist offered an insight of a player who appeared to be the league’s biggest coup in their history as former Premier League star Jermaine Pennant were embarking a new start in reigniting his playing career in Singapore.
Lim Weixiang of FourFourTwo walked away with the Great Eastern Photo of the Year for his photo captioned Torrential Welcome.
The photographer beautifully captured Tampines’ marquee signing Jermaine Pennant readying to whip a cross under the torrential downpour in a postponed match against Warriors FC.
