PROMOTING the concept of practising polite manners in everyday life is important, said Dr Hajah Fatimah binti Haji Chuchu, Senior Lecturer of Malay Language and Linguistics, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), yesterday at the Santun Bahasa stage performance held at the UBD Multipurpose Hall.
Comprising three sketches and presented by 24 students currently taking the module – AB1302 – the Santun Bahasa performance highlighted the practical aspects of politeness complementary to the theoretical knowledge and comprehension learnt throughout lectures and tutorials and what should be practised in daily life.
In an interview with the Bulletin, Dr Hajah Fatimah binti Haji Chuchu explained that in the 21st Century, people should be more sensitive in various issues and social aspects related to polite manners such as the behavioural aspects in different issues such as age, gender, location and situation.
The three sketches showcased different situations, highlighting and accentuating the knowledge of politeness and strategies in different contexts and settings. The performances also drew interactions with the audiences where it promoted the audiences to ruminate and practise the moral values integrated within them.
AB1302 is one of several modules offered by the Department of Malay Language and Linguistics, under the auspices of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The module aims to raise awareness on the practice of modesty in communication and social behaviour.
