BRUNEI Darussalam national petanque team collected a silver medal in the men’s triples event of the 10th Pan Pacific International Petanque Championship 2016 Nations Cup at Krabi, Thailand which was held from November 4 to 7.
The national team represented by the trio of Awang Mazlan bin Haji Yahya, Wirna bin Haji Mohd Yassin and Hamidun bin Haji Abd Hamid suffered a 13-5 defeat to Malaysia in the final.
In the preliminary round, Brunei Darussalam thrashed Japan (1) 13-2 before defeating New Zealand 13-4 in the quarterfinals.
Brunei Darussalam upstaged Chinese Taipei 13-6 to book a spot in the final against regional rivals Malaysia.
Despite falling short in the tournament, the national team demonstrated an excellent performance ousting strong teams such as Chinese Taipei and New Zealand en route to the final.
The championship was participated by eight countries namely Australia, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Singapore and Brunei Darussalam and attracted a total of 16 teams.
For the tournament, Brunei Darussalam had sent two national petanque teams. Brunei Darussalam national petanque team was led by Abd Ghani bin Dato Paduka Haji Mohd, President of the Brunei Darussalam Petanque Federation (BDPF) and Awang Junaidi bin Haji Mohd Said as the national team manager.
