THE Attorney General Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Hayati binti Pehin Orang Kaya Shahbandar Dato Seri Paduka Haji Mohd Salleh led a delegation to the 10th China-Asean Prosecutors General Conference held from November 9-10, 2016 in Vientiane, Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
The conference, themed ‘Strengthening Cooperation to Effectively Combat Transnational Crime’, focusing on tackling the crimes of drug and human trafficking, was attended by the attorney generals and prosecutors-general of all 10 Asean member states as well as China, representatives from the Public Prosecutor Office of Hong Kong, SAR, the Public Prosecutions Office of Macao, SAR and the Independent Commission Against Corruption of Macao SAR.
In his opening remarks, the Supreme Prosecutor of Lao PDR Khamsane Souvong, said in the past years, transnational crime, especially drug and human trafficking, has been the overall regional and international concern and continues to pose threats to national security, social and economic development of countries and causes great damage to life and property.
He hoped that the conference will facilitate the exchange of experiences on the roles of prosecutorial organisations in combating transnational crime, especially drug and human trafficking.
In her keynote speech, Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Hayati highlighted the steps taken by the Brunei Government in addressing the issues of drug and human trafficking, including the Attorney General’s Chambers’ efforts to amend legislation to comply with the Asean Convention Against Trafficking in Persons, especially women and children, and also reaffirmated Brunei Darussalam’s zero tolerance policy towards drugs.
One of the efforts highlighted by the Attorney General was the use of Brunei’s Criminal Asset Recovery Order 2012 to seize and forfeit proceeds of drug trafficking or any other serious crime.
She said these efforts deprive criminals of their lifeline which is the wealth they receive from their illegal activity and Brunei Darussalam is committed to fulfilling this objective.
The conference concluded with the signing of a Joint Declaration by all member states present to strengthen cooperation between Asean states and China to reaffirm the strong commitment to work closely together to address illicit drug trafficking and human trafficking at both national and regional levels.
