THE Department of Co-Curriculum Education, Ministry of Education, through the Akli Unit, yesterday awarded winners of the 4th Bigstart Competition 2016 during a ceremony at the at Multi-Purpose Hall of Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Secondary School, Mentiri.
Present as guest of honour was Mazriyani binti Haji Abdul Ghani, Director of e-Government National Centre, Prime Minister’s office.
In her speech, the Principal of Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Secondary School, Mentiri, Dayangku Hajah Norhasima binti Pengiran Haji Hassan said the Bigstart competition is an entrepreneurship project conducted by the Department of Co-Curriculum Education, Ministry of Education.
Apart from developing the crea-tivity of students, the competition also aimed to produce students who dare to face risks in order to achieve business objectives.
The principal said that all the participants successfully presented their suggestion papers carrying the theme ‘The Cuba Box – To Start With’. Several participants were selected and were given three months to implement their respective projects.
The selected students also attended workshops on creativity, innovation, and methods of taking risks. Several professionals from the Politeknik Brunei were invited to share their knowledge. She urged the students to always think out of the box in order for the mind to become more critical and make decisions easily in the future.
A total of 14 secondary schools, colleges and pre-universities participated in the competition. Out of all the participants, five teams were selected to proceed to the finals. Each of the finalists were given capital amounting to BND200 last April.
Masin Secondary School emerged as the champion of the competition.
Meanwhile, second place went to Sports School, third place was claimed by Berakas Secondary School, fourth place went to Pehin Datu Seri Maharaja Secondary School, Mentiri and fifth place was claimed by Sultan Sharif Ali Secondary School.
The ceremony also coincided with the presentation of donations amounting to BND200 from the proceeds of the finalists’ business.
Present to hand over the donation to Pusat Bahagia, Centre for Children with Special Needs (KACA), Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam, Society for the Management of Autism Related issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMARTER) and the National Association of the Blind was Acting Assistant Director of Co-Curriculum Education, Roslin bin Suhailee.
