THE Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah (PMMPMHAMB) Hospital in Tutong District will become a national one stop centre for some specialist treatments.
The move is part of the Ministry of Health’s (MoH) strategic drive to set up ‘centres of excellence’ at the major public hospitals in the country to provide quality and comprehensive healthcare services.
The latest developments were revealed yesterday at a press conference that was attended by Dr Hazri bin Haji Kifle, Acting Permanent Secretary at the MoH, Dr Hajah Maslina binti Haji Mohsin, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Professional) at the MoH, and Dr Sofian bin Dato Paduka Haji Johar, Medical Superintendent of PMMPMHAMB Hospital.
The one stop centre initiative is in line with the MoH’s strategic priorities to deliver excellence through consolidation and realignment of healthcare services.
The one stop centre will cater to patients throughout the country and is not exclusive to one particular district.
The initiative will see the implementation of a day case endoscopy unit in the PMMPMHAMB Hospital where patients can be registered, diagnosed and treated in one place. Another initiative is the enhancement of the provision of day case cataract eye surgery.
The one stop centre initiative is in line with the MoH’s five focus areas namely, improving service quality through alignment and consolidation, enhancing the reputation of MoH personnel; ensuring timely availability of medicine and basic services, reducing waiting time, and improving communication and basic courtesy.

The media were also informed of the decision to transfer non-emergency labour and delivery of babies in PMMPMHAMB Hospital to either the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha (RIPAS) Hospital or Suri Seri Begawan Hospital in Kuala Belait.
Tutong residents recorded over 500 newborns a year but less than 200 were delivered at PMMPMHAMB Hospital.
More than half of babies are delivered at either RIPAS Hospital with over 5,000 deliveries per year or Suri Seri Begawan Hospital with over 1,000 deliveries per year, the officials said.
The MoH said the in-patient services, including delivery and ward admission, for Obstetrics and Gynaecology in PMMPMHAMB Hospital will be better accommodated or transferred altogether to the ‘centres of excellence’ in both the Women and Children’s Centres at the RIPAS Hospital and the Suri Seri Begawan Hospital.
However, the Obstetrics and Gynaecology clinics, including the antenatal clinics, in PMMPMHAB Hospital are still operating normally at their current location.
The MoH reassured the public that emergency delivery cases are still accepted at PMMPMHAMB Hospital or any other health facilities.
