THE final round of the Brunei Entrepreneurship Education Scheme (BEES) 2.0 pitching competition took place yesterday, with the team from Seri Mulia Sarjana Secondary School emerging as the champions.
The final round of the pitching competition took place at The Empire Hotel & Country Club, shortly after the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Education, Brunei Shell Petroleum Co Sdn Bhd and Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
Ten schools participated in this year’s BEES 2.0 programme, with the top five competing in the final round.
Seri Mulia Sarjana Secondary School team was named champions for their product, “Comfinience”, which is a pseudo-binder that provides both comfort and convenience for people as they hand-carry books and other supplies. As champions, they won $1,000.
The first runner-up prize of $750 went to Sultan Sharif Ali Secondary School for their product, “Vespac”, while Chung Hwa Middle School, Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) as second runner-up for their “Performing Art and Childcare Centre”, winning $500.
The winners were presented their prizes by Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, the Minister of Education, who attended the event as the guest of honour.

Of the 10 schools that participated in this year’s BEES 2.0 programme, six are government schools and four are private schools. The products and services produced by the participants were judged based on criteria such as clarity, market potential, sustainable and competitive advantage, creativity and innovation as well as persuasion skills and confidence.
During the head of judge’s report yesterday, it was stated that the products have a lot of potential, that some of them have market validation and that some of them have generated ideas and tested them out on the market itself.
It was added in the report that the panel of judges had agreed that, in line with this year’s theme, “Entrepreneurial Mindset on Pitching”, the pitching had been “above satisfactory”.
It was shared in a press release from the organisers that, this year, one of the products that was invented has been identified to be eligible for “Patent submission for Utility and Design”, and will be looked through by the Patent Office at Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
The press release goes on to note that this has shown positive development and passion by the students, despite their young age, and in turn fits nicely into the theme for BEES 2.0 in 2017, which is “Entrepreneurial Mindset on Innovation”.
