Brunei for a green world

HIS Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam reaffirmed the Sultanate’s commitment towards mitigating the effects of climate change and welcomed the entry into force of the Paris Agreement.

“In addressing the challenges to climate change, Brunei Darussalam continues to maintain its forest conservation policy, and is committed to APEC’s goal to reduce the region’s aggregate energy intensity by 2035,” the monarch noted in a titah delivered yesterday during the Retreat Session of the 24th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting (AELM) held at the Lima Convention Center, Republic of Peru.

His Majesty looked forward to achieving a sustainable APEC Food System by 2020 through the Piura Declaration on Food Security. The monarch appreciated the APEC Connectivity Blueprint 2015-2025 and underscored the need for the blueprint to complement other connectivity efforts in the region.

His Majesty also emphasised continued support through best practices and capacity building in strengthening institutional connectivity, further highlighting the value of people-to-people exchanges in regional integration, particularly in education, as a way to promote innovative ideas and enhance skills development for the youth.

The monarch welcomed APEC students to study in Brunei Darussalam under the Global Discovery Programme.

The APEC Summit also endorsed the ‘2016 Leaders’ Declaration’, the ‘Lima Declaration on the Free Trade Area of the Asia Pacific (FTAAP)’ and the ‘APEC Services Competitiveness Roadmap’.

His Majesty was greeted on arrival at the Lima Convention Center by His Excellency Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, President of the Republic of Peru.

Prior to the AELM Retreat Session, His Majesty attended the Informal Conversation on the Global Economic Context which was presented by Ms Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

His Majesty then proceeded to attend the Session along with other APEC economic leaders.

The Retreat Session began with welcoming remarks by the President of the Republic of Peru. The Session focussed on ‘Challenges to Free Trade and Investment in the Current Global Context’; ‘Food Security, Climate Change Adaptation and Access to Water’; and ‘Integrating Asia Pacific: Towards a Real and Functional Connectivity in the Region’.

At midday, His Majesty joined other APEC economic leaders for a group photo session before proceeding to a luncheon together with other APEC economic leaders.

The 24th ALEM Session continued in the afternoon where His Majesty delivered the titah.
