SIX students from Meragang Sixth Form Centre (PTEM) left for Japan yesterday to attend the High School Students’ Summit on World Tsunami Awareness Day.

The programme is a joint cooperation between the Embassy of Japan in Brunei Darussalam and the Ministry of Education.

Accompanied by Education Officer Dayangku Nur Hidayatul Hafizah binti Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Othman, the students will be in Japan from November 22 to 29, with the summit to take place on November 25 to 26, in the Japanese town of Kurisho, Kochi Prefecture.

Among the main objectives of the programme is to foster leaders who will be responsible for mitigating the effects of earthquakes and tsunamis, and building national resilience to these natural disasters in the future.

With that goal in mind, the students will learn about post-tsunami and earthquake reconstruction in Japan.

The summit also provides an opportunity for students to learn more on Japan’s disaster risk prevention and reduction efforts, including its preparations for the Nankai Trough Earthquakes, which are great megathrust earthquakes that are predicted to occur along the fault under the Nankai Trough.

During the programme, students will also visit the Miyagi and Wakayama prefectures, where they will join Japanese students to learn about disaster prevention and reduction.

In addition, they will be participating in the High School Summit on World Tsunami Awareness Day, in Kurisho town, under the event’s theme of ‘What we, the next generation, can do to survive natural disasters from the viewpoints of self-help, cooperation and public-help.’

The programme will also include a ceremonial tree-planting in a disaster prevention forest.

Through learning sessions and discussions for students, the Embassy of Japan hopes to foster a multidimensional understanding of Japan and create friendships among the young people of all countries.
