YAYASAN Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (Yayasan) yesterday received 16 students and two teachers from Innova Junior College, Singapore who are in the country from November 17-25 for their Overseas Immersion Trip 2016 under the Malay Language Elective Programme (MLEP).
The students’ visit is aimed at understanding the roles and functions of Yayasan and to engage in community projects carried out by Yayasan.
In Mukim Sengkurong, the students helped in painting the house of Hassan @ Jamaludin bin Mahal, 70, a recipient of assistance from Yayasan; and a clean-up of the Kampong Selayun area in Mukim Sengkurong.
Also taking part in the house refurbishment were members of the Mukim Sengkurong Consultative Council (MPMS) and volunteers of Yayasan.
The members of MPMS and the Singapore delegation also contributed daily food necessities to Awang Hassan, presented by the Penghulu of Mukim Sengkurong, Haji Musa bin Haji Tahir, and the Head of the Singapore delegation, Azhar bin Dahlan.
The students also took a closer look at process of Parang-making, which is a source of income for Awang Hassan.
The Singapore delegation was welcomed yesterday by the Assistant Managing Director of Yayasan, Haji Musthapa bin Haji Matahir.
Muhammad Syafiq bin Mohamad Azli, a student from Innova Junior College, told the Bulletin that the purpose of the visit is to learn about the Malay culture and its way of life. “We will share our experience in Brunei with our colleagues in Singapore. We want to learn about the genuine Brunei culture as our Malay heritage is slowly getting diluted in the city state.
“This is the second trip. Previously, it involved different students. But the concept is still the same,” he said, adding that they visited the Royal Regalia Building to look at the royal heritage of the Sultanate.
Another Singapore student, Nur Muneera binti Mohamed Hussain, said that during the delegation’s visit to Kampong Ayer, they learnt of the way of life in Kampong Ayer.
Nur Muneera also shared her thoughts of their visit to the Menglait Secondary School, where they interacted with students with special needs and conducted various activities with them. “I was amazed at the initiatives taken by the school in taking care of the welfare of the special need students, who share the same class with normal students and receive the same kind of education.”
A third student, Nurin Nasuha binti Abdul Hasan, expressed appreciation for Brunei’s education system which offers both religious and conventional education on a fair manner, noting that religious education is taken seriously in Brunei Darussalam.
