FIVE men and five women have been selected out of 57 candidates to take part in the National Al-Quran Reading Competition 2016 for adults.
In the men’s category are Mohammad bin Ali, Haji Mohammad Fikri bin Haji Metussin, Haji Nasrul Fakhri bin Haji Yahya, Muhammad Hasrin bin Haji Kamis and Mohd Zul-Hafiz bin Tengah.
In the women’s category are Hajah Maidah binti Haji Abdul Rahman, Norezah binti Haji Md Deli, Hajah Siti Noor Dzuhairah binti Haji Damit, Hajah Nurul Akmalina binti Haji Yahya and Norefaezah binti Haji Emran.
Their names were announced yesterday by Pengiran Haji Haslin bin Pengiran Haji Ali, the chairman of the judging committee, during a prize presentation ceremony held at the Institut Tahfiz Al-Quran Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (ITQSHHB) in Jalan Tutong.
The guest of honour was Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, who presented prizes to the participating Qaris and Qariahs.
In his speech, Pengiran Haji Haslin said that the increase in the number of entries was encouraging, in terms of developing the art of Al-Quran reading in Brunei towards a more regional and international standard.
The event – organised by the Islamic Eminence Development Section of the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA), together with ITQSHHB – also saw recitations of the Al-Quran verses by Qari Muhammad Hasrin, and Qariah Hajah Maidah.
Also attending were Dato Seri Setia Haji Abdul Aziz bin Orang Kaya Maharaja Lela Haji Mohd Yusof, the Permanent Secretary at MoRA; and Haji Harun bin Haji Junid and Roslan bin Haji Taja’ah, the Deputy Permanent Secretaries at MoRA.
