ISO certification is now in the world becoming a necessity for many organisations, from government agencies to leading organisations, especially in the industrialised world and in this “energy-hungry world”. Being ISO-certified means the organisation is operating under high level of standards and quality.
Thangarajah Hariram, Managing Director of Navin Sdn Bhd, who provides management consultancy services to organisations in Brunei Darussalam said getting ISO certification is not easy.
He was talking to Borneo Bulletin during an interview in conjunction with the recent achievement of local firm, MOC Sdn Bhd, a fully Bruneian-owned company that provides freight forwarding and other logistic services, in obtaining the internationally acclaimed standard of ISO 9001:2008 QMS certifications.
MOC was awarded the ISO certification by The British Assessment Bureau after undergoing a thorough assessment by Navin Sdn Bhd.
MOC Sdn Bhd was incorporated in 1995, owned and managed by Bruneians with its head office located in Kuala Belait. Its logistic services comprise air, sea and land freight forwarding; marine services and agencies; transportation/haulage; oil and gas industries logistics; offshore handler, husbanding services; warehousing; industrial packing; worldwide movers; representatives; chauffer services; car rental; cargo aircraft and ship charter.
Mohd Azman Ibrahim, MOC Quality Assurance Manager, highligthed that the ISO 9001 QMS certification is an important milestone for the company, and the first step towards a higher ISO standards in the future. He said MOC is already taking steps to enhance its ISO certification.
“The ISO certification is very important for us, not just in dealing with local clients, but also overseas clients, because by having this certification, they do not have to ask much, and equally we do not have to elaborate much about the level of quality we have in the company because the certification is already a proven record of the level of standards we are operating under,” he said.
Hariram believed companies in Brunei should strive to get ISO certification. According to him, it has become a necessity for businesses who want to portray high level of quality to their customers or clients.
Hariram said as a consultant, Navin offers their clients an effective system for ISO certification consultancy services based on comprehensive analysis of existing system set up by the their client, and take total responsibility in their consulting approach of implementing ISO-related standards in companies and assure the client get the certificate as well as developing a solid management systems in time-bound manner and help every aspect of quality process improvement.
Types of ISO certification under Navin’s areas of expertise include ISO 9001:2008; ISO 14001 Environmental Management System; OHSAS 18001 – Occupational Health & Safety Management Systems; ISO 13485 medical devices; and ISO 17025 for testing and calibration laboratories.
MOC said the ISO certification was awarded for their main business in freight forwarding, and two of its departments (operations) that include warehousing and transport are yet to be ISO certified.
Mohd Azman Ibrahim explained that their ISO 2008 certification will expire in two years and they are in the process of upgrading it to ISO 2015 standard. He said the company must go for the 2008 certification first before going for 2015, because the company started operation before the 9001:2015 was published.
Hariram is confident that MOC is ready to upgrade to the ISO 2015 certification by 2017. Hariram explained the International Organization for Standardization, who is responsible for the ISO 9000, ISO 14000, ISO 27000, ISO 22000 and other international management standards, will review and revise these standards in periodic timeframe.
Mohd Azman said MOC is already exploring and ready to upgrade to the ISO 2015 standards by 2017.
