RECENT numbers show an increase in HIV cases in the country, said Iswandy Ahmad, President of the Brunei Darussalam AIDS Council (BDAC), yesterday while stressing the need for further action through education, research, preventive measures and awareness among the public.

“There is an urgent need to reach out to key groups in the population to raise HIV awareness,” he said.

“Our message to them should include ways of preventing infection and encouraging tests.”

He was speaking during a prize presentation ceremony, held at the Maya Puri branch of The Coffee Bean Brunei in the capital, for the winners of a short video competition recently organised by the council to promote AIDS/HIV awareness through social media.

Headlined ‘RED: Re-educate, Empower, De-stigmatise’, the competition which was open to the public took place in conjunction with World AIDS Day on December 1.

Awangku Mohd Akmal Muazzam bin Pengiran Mohd Nor Islam of Daily Productions in second place won a one-night stay at The Empire Hotel & Country Club.

Coming in third place, Abdul Khabir bin Zainidi of Feu Productions received a $150 cash prize, while consolation prizes were also given out.

During yesterday’s event, BDAC also launched a corporate video made by interns from Universiti Brunei Darussalam who had completed their Community Outreach Programme with the council last semester.

Iswandy conveyed his thanks to the Brunei Government for lending its assistance and support to the cause.

A special mention also went to the Penyinar Club, BDAC’s youth division, whose members devoted much of their time and effort to raise HIV/AIDS awareness.
