THE Kuwait Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) has evinced keen interest to extend cooperation in enhancing trade with Brunei.
Brunei companies can participate in the development process of Kuwait and vice versa through public-private partnerships (PPP) and on a build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis, Sehab Al-Tawfiqi, Director of the Registration Department at the Kuwait Chamber, said yesterday.
He was speaking at a dialogue session between the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) and the KCCI yesterday at International Convention Centre (ICC) in Berakas.
Sehab Al-Tawfiqi, said the meeting will help boost bilateral ties between the two nations and give ample business opportunities in Brunei. Current bilateral trade figures are not encouraging, which means that more efforts need to be done to improve the position.
Meanwhile, Dato Paduka Haji Hamdilah bin Haji Abdul Wahab, Advisor of the Brunei Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said NCCI and the Kuwait Chamber of Commerce and Industry discussed ways to build a sustainable bridge to confront and overcome the dependency on oil and gas in Brunei and support its national agenda to diversify the economy to be a more export-oriented.
Diversification away from oil and gas calls for more energetic engagement both in the public and private sector, he added.
“We in the private sector have a head-start in the Sultanate and the foundation has already been laid when Brunei Darussalam established diplomatic ties with Kuwait in 1990. The leadership of both countries have clearly laid solid foundations that made us strong and resilient. It has been enabling businesses, especially SMEs and MSMEs, to flourish and support export-oriented larger enterprises as we build our capacity to grow and export as part of our national agenda even amid low oil prices,” he said in a press statement.
The Brunei Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry is under NCCI.
The meeting was highlighted with a presentation on the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, focussing on the role of the Brunei Malay Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Another presentation underscored potential investment opportunities in areas including oil and gas related services, tourism including ecotourism, sports and ICT services.
