THE Brunei contingent for the 9th BIMP-EAGA (Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area) Friendship Games yesterday morning left the country on a CN235 aircraft of Squadron 15 under the Royal Brunei Air Force to their destination, Samarinda in East Kalimantan, Indonesia.
This is the first time that the Brunei contingent is travelling to their destination onboard a military plane, thanks to the cooperation from the Royal Brunei Air Force under Royal Brunei Armed Forces.
Led by Haji Mohamad Rosfazilah bin Haji Yusly, Chef de Mission, the Brunei contingent comprises 21 members including 12 athletes, five coaches, a secretariat as well as a physiotherapist and communications officer.
The guest of honour who sent off the contingent at the Royal Brunei Air Force Base in Rimba was Dato Paduka Dr Haji Affendy bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
This year, Brunei Darussalam is taking part in athletics with Muhammad Noor Firdaus Ar-Rashid bin Haji Mohd Idris participating in the 100Mm and 200m run, Mohammad Aqil Asyraaf bin Saharddy Irwan in long jump and Haji Muhd Nur Zul Isamuddin bin Wan Zulaini in shot-put and discus.
In Karate-do, Awangku Mohd Azeem Aqmal bin Pengiran Omar is participating in the Individual Kata.
The all-female Pencak Silat team comprises Anisah Najihah binti Abdullah who will be participating in Seni Tunggal, Nur Azimatunnaemah binti Simat, Qistina Athirah binti Zainal and Nur Wasiqah Aziemah binti Rosihan who will be participating in Seni Regu.
In Sepak Takraw, the Brunei team comprises Mohd Alliffuddin bin Jamaluddin, Zatie Hidayat bin Saidi, Mohammad Nazrol Nizam bin A Hamidun and Mohd Aiman bin Matahir who will compete in the Double and Regu.
Haji Mohamad Rosfazilah in an interview said, “The Brunei contingent has done its preparation to compete in the 9th BIMP-EAGA Friendship Games through training and with this preparation, the contingent will do its best to compete against athletes from other countries.”
Brunei won a total of 15 medals – three gold, eight silver and four bronze – at the 8th BIMP-EAGA Friendship Games 2014 held in Malaysia.
Held biennially, the games are based on the principle of fostering closer ties and uniting the spirit of friendship towards the development of sports and peace.
