AFTER a week of training, the trainees of the National Service Programme (PKBN) were reunited with their families in an emotional gathering of tears and warm embraces at the launching of the 6th intake at the new PKBN Training Camp in Mukim Batu Apoi, Temburong.
In an interview with the Sunday Bulletin, Roslan bin Haji Yahya and his wife Surina binti Julaihi, parents of 11399 Nurin Farhana, said the programme is good for youths as they are taught self-discipline and how to be independent.
“Through this programme, they can experience hardship and appreciate their relationship with their families. As with most people, distance makes the heart grow fonder. I hope she does her best, will not be faint-hearted, and proves to her family that she can do it,” they said.
Meanwhile, 11430 Nurul Azwa Ateena binti Asmawi said she has learnt many things after a week of training, including time management and discipline, and at the same time has also established new friendships.
Her father, Asmawi bin Jaludin said, “This PKBN programme is part of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s titah, and we as his people welcome this programme for the greater good of the community. As youths nowadays are choosing the course of their lives, it is best for us to uphold the monarch’s titah. This is our contribution to the country and for the youth’s future.”
He said, within three months of the programme, the youths will reap many benefits, and will be educated to be more disciplined, adaptive and able to work in a group.
“I hope that those who complete this course will be able to take the country a step further in the future,” he added.
Meanwhile, Haji Mokti bin Haji Raub explained that this is the second time he has sent one of his children to the programme – his daughter was part of the first PKBN intake.
“What encouraged me to send my son to participate in this programme is that it trains our children to be more in tune to their national identity and religion as the there are many social ills that can influence them. So through this programme, with help from professionals who are experienced and educated, these children will be more disciplined and well rooted.,” he said.
His son, 11152 Muhd Fadzil Afiq bin Haji Mokti, said, “It’s difficult without parents around to look after you when you are unwell and this has made me appreciate my relationship with my family. I want to show them I can complete this programme and how I’ve learnt to be more independent.”
PKBN’s main goal is to create a generation who have mental and physical strength; have creative and innovative leadership; have total discipline and self-confidence; who are skilled in working in a team as well produce those who have the spirit of friendship.
In addition, components of entrepreneurship and community service are incorporated into this programme. Aspects of leadership and management are also emphasised in training programmes – especially in the aspect of financial and business management as a measure of encouragement for the youth in becoming successful entrepreneurs who can contribute positively to the development of the nation.
