MEMBERS of the Brunei Classic Volkswagen Group (BCVG) recently participated in the Borneo Bugfest 2016 held in Kota Kinabalu from December 3-4.
The group comprising nine classic Volkswagen Beetles led by Haji Abdul Hamid bin Haji Abu Bakar left the country on December 2 during a flag-off ceremony officiated by Wardi bin Haji Mohd Ali, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Tourism) at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism.
The group was also joined by Volkswagen clubs from Kuching, Pontianak, Banjarmasin in Kalimantan as well as from Bali, Indonesia who arrived in Brunei on November 30 where they were hosted by BCVG and were toured around the country.
During the Borneo Bugfest 2016, members of BCVG participated in competitions in various categories. BCVG members won eight awards during the event.
BCVG members Simon Keller, Abdul Rahman bin Haji Mohd Hassan and Haji Rosli bin Haji Md Daud won the first, second and third places respectively for the Best Standard Classic category.
Haji Rosli was also announced as the third place winner for Outstanding Best Interior (original) while Mohammad Hanizam bin Mohd Alidin won third place for te Best Paint (non-metallic) category.
Meanwhile, Haji Abdul Hamid won third place for the Best Sticker design category and Awang Ahmad bin Md Ali won third place for the Best German-Look category.
The most awaited Best of the Best award went to Simon Keller for his 1964 left-hand drive Volkswagen Beetle.
The strong showing at the event sought to inspire and attract more Volkswagen owners and non-owners to appreciate the value of such classic and unique cars.
The BCVG members also made an effort to promote Brunei as a tourist destination by distributing leaflets and souvenirs to participants from other neighbouring countries and also to the general public who attended the event where more than 80 classic Volkswagen Beetle and Combi units were on display.
BCVG members were also able to interact with other Volkswagen owners and exchange views which led to fostering closer ties with other participants.
The Borneo Bugfest is a bi-annual event organised by Volkswagen Club Kota Kinabalu. This year’s edition marks the second time the group has participated in the event.
The group hopes organise similar events in Brunei in the future to boost the local tourism industry and create opportunities for small businesses.
