RESIDENTS of Bukit Beruang National Housing Scheme and the neighbouring areas can expect the arrival of telephone and broadband services by the first quarter of 2017, as TelBru begins installation work of connecting these homes with fibre technology.

The initiative, which took off earlier this week, will prioritise existing residents in the area, while unoccupied addresses will gradually receive connection upon request.

The project – which will eventually cater to 1,500 homes under the housing scheme and an additional 300 houses in the same vicinity – is expected to be completed by mid-2017, but the first host of houses can expect to be connected as early as March.

These connections will provide further coverage in the country’s third largest district, which is home to approximately 44,000 people, in the wake of technological upgrades that continue to be made on a regular basis.

The Chief Executive Officer of TelBru, David Kay, views the project as an opportunity to promote an inclusive ICT environment for local residents in other districts.

“The future of such an initiative,” he said, “will also include the equipping other present and potential housing areas with similar infrastructure, in a move to encourage the growth of the Smart Nation.”

To date, fibre connections in the Tutong District range from Penanjong to Pantai Seri Kenangan, and in Kampong Serambangun, as well as key commercial locations in the district’s capital, while plans are underway to provide further improvements in rural areas through the utilisation of different forms of technology.

The scope of TelBru’s nationwide upgrade aims to replace ageing copper technology with long-lasting and highly durable fibre optics that have recorded unprecedented speeds over thousands of kilometres in a number of countries, and which the company aspires to emulate for Brunei’s future as the need for unimpeded data connectivity continues to grow.

To enable efficient arra-ngements as part of Brunei’s infrastructural development, TelBru has embedded staff with the Authority for Building Control and Construction Industry (ABCi) specifically for telecommunications pla-nning in future projects, including plans for new housing developments.
