MUKIM Telisai in Tutong yesterday celebrated 36 of its most senior citizens at the Senior Citizen Congregation Ceremony 2016. The seniors are more than 80 years old.
The event was held at Community Hall of Bukit Beruang in Tutong, with the guest of honour, Haji Adnan bin Haji Adam, the Acting Tutong District Officer.
The event began with a recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah led by Imam Haji Junaidi bin Haji Sabtu, Imam of Kg Telisai Mosque, followed by a welcoming address by Haji Ramli bin Haji Lahit, Penghulu of Mukim Telisai.
Among the highlights of the event was an awards presentation to two of the senior citizens that are still active and in good health despite their old age – Haji Abdullah bin Ghafar, 86, from Kg Lalit, Telisai and Hajah Yakot binti Haji Haris, 84. The eldest in the ceremony was Hajah Jijah binti Metali, 91.
There was also the launching ceremony of the Mukim Telisai Consultative Council Visit Album which contained written records and photos from visits made by the Mukim Telisai Consultative Council during a five-year period.
They had visited places such as Kota Kinabalu, Papar, Kota Belud, Tuaran Inanam, Penampang, Mukah, Dalat, Daro, Sok Matu, Tanjong Manis, Kuching and Lundu.
From the visits, the consultative council was able to produce unique delicacies based on local tastes, such as Kueh Lidah, Sapit, Bahulu, Mee Kuning, Meroko, Cap-Cap, Laksa Irah, Ardam and Penyaram of various colours.
After the presentation of awards to the two senior citizens and the official launching of Mukim Telisai Consultative Council Visit Album, the ceremony continued with a Dikir Marhaban and a Doa for the senior citizens and ‘Doa Allah Peliharakan Sultan dan Negara’.
The ceremony was also enlivened with a Tausyeh performance and drama by the younger generations of Mukim Telisai.
In a speech the Penghulu of Mukim Telisai described the importance of the event and the importance of remembering the contributions made by senior citizens.
The event was also important to remind the younger generation about the sacrifices of the older generation, and the importance of looking over the welfare and well-being of the senior citizens.
He added that Haji Abdullah was and still an active participant in various community and social activities in Mukim Telisai. Although he is 86 years old, he is still an active person, who recently managed to renew his driving licence despite his age. He drives himself to Tamu Tutong to sell his produce and volunteers to drive his grandchildren to and from their schools.
Hajah Yakot is also an active participant in community activities and is quite active in assisting her fellow villagers in various endeavours.
