THE Oil and Gas Discovery Centre (OGDC) is currently holding cool, fun, science activities for children aged nine to 12 years old who are on their school holiday.

The activities, which launched on December 10, are made to be fun yet educational at the same time to complement Brunei’s STEM education. OGDC had seven days packed with activities that ranged from simple arts and crafts to building electronics. Throughout the seven days, approximately 160 children took part in the activities.

Participants were given an opportunity to express their creativity in an arts and crafts activity which had the children creating ‘bubble and almond art’. During the Earth Quest Adventures session, children were taken to explore the inside of OGDC’s latest earth quest exhibition, searching for answers about the wonders of the earth.

One of the most anticipated electronic activities was the ‘DIY paper torch light’. Participants were given their own components such as wires, LEDs, batteries and tapes to create and design their own mini torch light. This was also an innovative way to learn about electricity and current, and expose the younger generation to the subject of physics.

On December 11 and 14, activities were made more fun with the presence of members from Toastmasters Brunei. Four members from the group were at OGDC to showcase their science show and conducted hands-on science activities for the participants.

Also in this month’s list of activities was the centre’s well-known kitchen science activity. The participants had firsthand experience with the famous ‘Coke and Mentos explosion’, the ‘DIY lava lamp’ with cooking oil, food colouring, vinegar and baking soda, and the ‘Five layer liquid’, an activity explaining what density is.

To wrap up on the cool fun science activities, different science shows were presented, from a Liquid Nitrogen show, to the famous fire show.

In addition, a water rocket challenge will be held on December 24, divided into two categories.

The Junior category is open to participants aged eight to 14 years old, while the Multi-launcher category is open to participants aged 18 years old and above.

The first place winner for the Junior category will win a cash prize worth $100 while the first place winner for the Multi-launcher category will be going home with a cash prize worth $250.

Registration for the competition is open until December 22.
