THE Pakistani business community recently hosted a dinner reception at The Rizqun International Hotel, in honour of Major General (Rtd) Tariq Rashid Khan, the new Pakistani High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam.
The ceremony began with a recitation of verses from the Al-Quran, and prayers for the victims of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) disaster on December 7.
In his welcoming speech, Haji Abdul Ul Quyyume Negyal, a Brunei permanent resident and a member of the Pakistan-Brunei Friendship Association, said, “Tariq Rashid Khan has a rich experience of meritorious services for over 38 years while serving in Pakistan and abroad. We hope that with his presence in Brunei Darussalam, bilateral relation between the two brotherly countries will be further enhanced.”
Tariq Rashid Khan responded by saying that he was both honoured and privileged to be representing the Pakistani Government in Brunei, which he described as “a land of peace, harmony and brotherhood”.
“Pakistan has achieved self-reliance in the fields of agriculture and commerce including fruit, vegetables, Halal food, textiles, sporting goods, medical instruments, pharmaceuticals, automobiles and defence weapons,” said the Pakistani High Commissioner. “Brunei can get these products from Pakistan at much lesser prices, compared to their present cost.”
He also promised to enhance existing people-to-people contact, trade and the exchange of high-level visits between Brunei and Pakistan. Tariq Rashid Khan concluded his speech by thanking everyone present and encouraging members of the Pakistani business community to work hard in making useful contributions towards Bruneian society.
The dinner reception was attended by Pakistani expatriates, prominent local figures and members of the Pakistan-Brunei Friendship Association.
