VARIOUS activities and projects have been lined up for the Tutong ‘Mini Kelulut Carnival 2016’, which will be officially launched today at the Tutong District Civic Centre Complex, by Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerna Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Haji Awang Abu Bakar bin Haji Apong, the Minister of Home Affairs.
The carnival is a joint collaboration between the Tutong District Office, the Tasbee Meliponiculture Farm in Kampong Sungai Kelugos, the Tutong District Tourism Facilitation and Coordination Body and several local producers of ‘Madu Kelulut’ (stingless bee honey).
Besides local ‘Kelulut’ brands, other products will also go on display at the carnival, including homemade delicacies and village handicrafts.
One local producer, Haji Mohd Yamin bin Haji Jaafar, told the Bulletin that harvesting ‘Madu Kelulut’ requires the proper time and methods, since one colony yields between 500ml to 800ml of honey in the fruit season, compared to other periods in the year.
Haji Mohd Yamin began rearing stingless bees as a post-retirement hobby, in 2014. He learned the trade from friends, and ventured into full-time production after being inundated with plenty of orders for stingless bee honey.
He also expressed his hope that more similar carnivals would be organised in other districts, as a way of promoting the health benefits of Madu Kelulut and to give a wider exposure of Brunei’s honey industry to the public.
