AS the country getting geared up to welcome the New Year, several supermarkets sold out their meat items by Friday evening.
“Customers turned up to purchase meat products as early as 7am. Around 5,000 kilogrammes of whole chicken, 1,000 kilogrammes of chicken wings, 2,000 kilogrammes of chicken breasts, and 3,000 kilogrammes of chicken thighs were sold out by sunset. We also sold 2,000 kilogrammes of Australian beef meat and 200 kilogrammes of lamb shoulders,” said a salesperson at a butcher shop in a supermarket.
A supervisor at another supermarket, meanwhile, said they still have enough stock of meat, but it will take time to fill in the trays as the meat needed to be cut and portioned.
“In the beef section, our most popular items are beef knuckle and topside; and in the lamb section our hot selling item is lamb shoulder. By the end of the day, we are looking at selling 120 kilogrammes of chicken, 50 kilogrammes of topside and knuckle cuts, 25 kilogrammes of miscellaneous beef cuts and more than 100 kilogrammes of lamb shoulder,” he said.
According to him, this year-end sales boom is normal as many people who received their annual bonus would spend big on food to celebrate the New Year.
