THE first day of the Federation of British International Schools in Asia (FOBISIA) swimming competition hosted by International School Brunei (ISB) began yesterday at Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex Swimming Pool in Berakas and will run until tomorrow.
In attendance were His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, and Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah binti Pengiran Haji Salleh Ab Rahaman to witness the participation of Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda ‘Abdul Muntaqim ibni Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah in the Boys 9-10 Years Old 50m Backstroke event.
Also present were Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Anak Muneerah Madhul Bolkiah binti Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah and Yang Teramat Mulia Pengiran Muda Muhammad Aiman ibni Duli Yang Teramat Mulia Paduka Seri Pengiran Muda Mahkota Pengiran Muda Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah.
They were received by Pehin Datu Lailaraja Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Awang Halbi bin Haji Mohd Yussof, the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, and Dato Paduka Dr Haji Affendy bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.
The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports officiated the swimming competition and presented medals to the winners of the Boys and Girls 100m Breaststroke event in the morning.
Among the swimming events were the 100m breaststroke, 200m freestyle, 200m individual medley, 100m butterfly as well as the 50m and 200m backstroke.
This weekend will see almost 400 swimmers from 13 schools from six countries sharing the pool as they compete for top honours in their respective age-groups.
Among them were Tiger Shark from Bangkok Patana School, Bulldog from Bangkok Prep, British International School Kuala Lumpur, the British School Manila, Dulwich College Seoul, ELC International School from Selangor, Malaysia, BSJ Electric Eels, Harrow International School from Bangkok, Hammerheads from International School Brunei, ISP Uplands, Jerudong International School, STA Marlins, and Wellington College International School from Shanghai.
FOBISIA was established in 1988 with just five members and is now a federation with 52 British-curriculum International Schools throughout Asia. Together they provide a platform for schools to network, share best practices, and provide opportunity for inter-school competitions and enrichment programmes.
