NISSAN has introduced a revolutionary autonomous driving technology known as ProPILOT, which is designed for highway use in single-lane traffic.

They are the first Japanese automaker to introduce a combination of steering, accelerator and braking that can be operated in full automatic mode, easing the driver’s workload in heavy highway traffic and long commutes.

During the Nissan A&O Tour 2016, media representatives were given the opportunity to test drive the Nissan Serena, equipped with the ProPILOT, with the aim to experience the technology and understand how it performs during traffic situations.

The test drive took place at the Nissan Grandrive.

The ProPILOT controls the accelerator, brakes and steering based on information obtained from a mono-camera that is equipped with advanced image-processing software.

Once the ProPILOT is activated, it automatically controls the distance between the vehicle, using a constant speed by the drive – approximately 30 kilometres per hour and 100 km/h.

The ProPILOT system, which is installed in the Nissan Serena in Japan, was developed in pursuit of an easy-to-use technology for highway driving conditions in the country.

Nissan had carried out intensive studies of the driving conditions in various Japanese regions, so the system can be used in other countries as well.

The ProPILOT will be introduced into other vehicles, including the Qashqai in Europe this year.

Additionally, the technology will be introduced to the United States and China.

Media personnel were further informed that in 2018, Nissan will introduce a multi-lane autonomous driving technology that would enable automatic lane change on highways.

In 2020, Nissan also plans to introduce the technology on urban roads and intersections.

With the introduction of the autonomous drive technology, Nissan will certainly advance its leadership in this technology, further enhancing safety and pioneering a new era for automobiles.
