Royalty grace Chinese New Year festivities

THE Chinese New Year (CNY) was kicked off with colourful events and lively performances in Brunei Darussalam yesterday.

The first day of the Lunar Year of the Rooster saw several prominent members of the local Chinese community hosting open houses that were attended by members of the royalty, cabinet ministers, former ministers, senior government officials and foreign dignitaries among others.

Among members of the royal family who graced some of the open houses were His Royal Highness Prince Mohamed Bolkiah and Her Royal Highness Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Zariah.

Accompanying Their Royal Highnesses were other members of the royal family who visited open houses hosted by prominent figures of both the local and Chinese communities, including the one organised by prominent businessman Pehin Kapitan Lela Diraja Dato Paduka Goh King Chin.

The royal entourage was greeted upon arrival by Pehin Dato Paduka Goh King Chin and spouse as well as family members who also had the opportunity to hold a get-together session with their royal highnesses.

Another notable businessman Chang Ein Hong, also known as the ‘Rolex King’, hosted an open house on the first day of Year of the Rooster who hosted an open house on the first day of Year of the Rooster at his residence in Kg Salambigar, Jalan Muara where his guests among all included cabinet ministers, deputy ministers, former ministers, foreign diplomats as well as senior government officials and business leaders.

Meanwhile the Chairman of First Emporium Group Lim Koh Phay hosted an open house at his residence in Jalan Aman which was attended by the representative of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Brunei Darussalam Jason Wan and spouse as well as the group’s managing directors Lim Kian Seng, Lim Kian Liong and Yong Chee Seng.

Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, has more than 4,000 years of history and is the grandest and most important annual event for the Chinese community.

One of their traditional festivals, it is a time for the whole family to reunite.

Just like during Hari Raya Aidilfitri when Muslims invite relatives and friends to their homes to join in the celebrations, the Chinese community also holds open houses to usher in the Lunar New Year.
